Incomplete records of a firm of private bankers in Portland, Me. John B. Brown first engaged in the grocery business in a small way, then organized the Portland Sugar Company, for which there are two volumes of records, 1855-1872. After the sugar plant was destroyed by fire in 1866 he turned to private banking, taking in as partners his sons, Philip Henry Brown and John Marshall Brown. Records include ledgers, daybooks, and a letter book.
